Board of Trustees

Parent Trustee (Chair)

Duncan Boyes –
I have two children currently attending Golden Sands School, so I have a vested interest in the future and success of our school and its students.   I have worked for the Ministry for Children for well over a decade and have a strong understanding of the different needs that a community faces and the importance of our children’s education and social needs.  I am in my second term on the Board and have a firm understanding of what the governance role entails and like having the opportunity to provide my support to our school.

I am currently in my third term, having been on the Board since 2013.  My husband and I are the proud parents of three children, two of whom are current students at Golden Sands School, with our oldest son (a past student) now at Papamoa College.  We have been loyal, active and supportive parents of the school since 2012 – when there was only 130 students!  I have a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honors and Arts from the University of Waikato and almost 20 years experience as a litigation solicitor.  I am presently employed by Holland Beckett in Tauranga as an Associate specialising in all aspects of family law including separations, relationship property, child care and domestic violence.  I have a particular interest in the role of lawyer for child.  I am a critical and logical thinker who is not afraid to ask the hard questions.  My legal experience has been of particular use on the Board when reviewing policy documents and considering the impact of new legislation on schools and ensuring compliance.

My wife and I have two boys who currently attend Golden Sands School, our family are active supporters of the school.  We have enjoyed the community spirit that has grown in the area and have met some wonderful parents throughout our years here.  I have experience in senior leadership positions in Fonterra and Trustpower, specialising in environmental sustainability.  I have strong skills in critical evaluation, decision making, and development, implementation and monitoring of strategic/annual plans.  This is my first term on the Board and I want to ensure that all children are well prepared to transition with ease when they leave for Intermediate/Secondary school.  If they can experience this journey while having fun and being proud of their school, then in my view, their school has served them well.  Every school presents opportunities to improve academically, culturally and socially.  Specific areas of interest for me on the Board are maintaining the amazing teaching and support staff and improving outcomes for those students who may not be currently achieving their full potential.  It is vitally important to me that adequate measures are in place to ensure students and staff feel safe and happy every day.

My husband and I have two boys at Golden Sands School and I really enjoy being an active member of our school community.  I have previously been the Treasurer for FroGSS (Friends of Golden Sands School group), you may have seen me in the background at pizza lunches, discos, bake sales and the fun run.  In my professional life I am a chartered accountant and authorised financial advisor.  This is my first term on the Board and I believe a key part of our role is making our teachers feel valued, well-resourced, supported and fulfilled in their work, so that they can be the best teachers they can be, and therefore bring out the best in our kids.
Jackson Wood (Ngāti Raukawa/Ngāti Tuwharetoa)
My wife and I have been involved in the school since arriving in Papamoa in 2013.  We are the proud parents of four, with our youngest daughter currently attending Golden Sands School, our son Jackson (a past student) now attends Tauranga Boys College, and our oldest two daughters have now left home.  I am actively involved in school life and have been a coach for various sports teams, both in the school and wider community.  I’m normally the Dad in the background, happy to muck in and help out when needed with cultural and sports events, school trips, beach days and the well known Fun Run.  This is my first term on the Board and I want to ensure all children are happy, feel valued and look forward to going to school to learn.  I also believe that a school community thrives when whanau, leaders and teachers work together for the greater good of all children.  I own a successful local Plumbing and Gas fitting business.  It is a real privilege to represent the parent community on the Board and be part of the decision making that will ensure our children get all the teaching and learning opportunities they deserve.

Staff Trustee

Sharon Swain
I have worked at Golden Sands School since February 2017, formerly as a Teacher Aide and now as the Office Administrator.  I feel privileged to be on the Board of such a wonderful school community, and love meeting all the children and parents that come through the door.
